PORTLAND PRESS HERALD / MAINE SUNDAY TELEGRAM

People across Maine were broken-hearted at the loss of two public servants who died in the line of duty, Berwick Fire Capt. Joel Barnes, 32, and Maine State Police Detective Benjamin Campbell, 31.

Campbell was helping a stranded motorist on the side of Interstate 95 in Hampden when he was struck and killed by one of two wheels that separated from a passing logging truck.

Barnes was battling an apartment fire in Berwick when he was trapped inside. He is credited with saving a fellow department member’s life.

Both were mourned by thousands of people at public memorial services in Portland.
