A Place to Start

A Place to Start is a nonprofit organization, started in memory of a loved one who had Alzheimer’s disease, that provides hope, help and guidance to other families in similar circumstances. Avesta Housing

Bangor Area Transportation/BAT Community Connector

The Community Connector is a fixed route public transit system operated by the City of Bangor to meet the transportation needs for the residents of Bangor, Brewer, Hampden, Veazie, Orono, Old Town, and University of Maine.

Bangor Area Visiting Nurses/Hospice of Eastern Maine

One of three home care agencies merged under the umbrella of Eastern Maine Home Care, this agency provides eastern and central Maine residents with home care and hospice services. Services are paid for by public and private sources, or directly by patients and their families, tax-exempt donations help cover the cost of care provided to the uninsured or underinsured.

Brunswick Housing Authority

Maine Long-Term Care Ombudsman

A nonprofit agency authorized by state and federal laws to investigate complaints related to nursing facilities and assisted living facilities. Also provides advocacy on behalf of home care service recipients and hospice care recipients.

Maine Medical Center Geriatric Center

Outpatient geriatric programs. Services include a Falls Clinic for strength and balance, general geriatric assessments, and a dementia evaluation center.

In dementia evaluations, a collaborative team consisting of a geriatrician, nurse and social workers can make a diagnosis of dementia or memory disorder, provide information about the disease, and offer access to resources for appropriate care.

Sanford Housing Authority

Manages public housing and Section 8 voucher programs for Sanford, Springvale and the surrounding towns of Alfred, Kennebunk, Lebanon, North Berwick, Wells, Shapleigh and Acton.

Properties include 114 units of age-restricted senior housing and the 35-unit Mayflower Place assisted living facility in Sanford (see link, above).

Savvy Caregiver courses

Administered by the regional Agencies on Aging, the Savvy Caregiver program is a 12 hour evidence-based training program that helps caregivers take care of family members or friends with dementia who are living at home.

Senior Companion Program (SCP) of York and Cumberland Counties

SCP volunteers provide companionship to fail seniors in order to provide socialization, transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping and other essential errands, and respite for family caregivers.  Volunteers receive a non-taxable stipend in return for volunteering, meal and travel support.

Senior Corps volunteers

Senior Corps connects older Americans with volunteer opportunities.

Through Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions and RSVP, the program makes use of the expertise of people over 55. Senior Corps volunteers may be coaches, mentors, companions, tutors or contribute their knowledge to community organizations.
