A Place to Start

A Place to Start is a nonprofit organization, started in memory of a loved one who had Alzheimer’s disease, that provides hope, help and guidance to other families in similar circumstances. We can help develop individualized care plans for living with a dementia diagnosis. We also offer mentorship, navigation assistance, guidance, planning, support and understanding.

Affordable housing developer and manager of affordable apartments in southern Maine (mostly York and Cumberland counties, plus Livermore Falls), including many age-restricted units. Also operates the Inn at Village Square 37-bed assisted living facility in Gorham.

Catholic Charities of Maine – Agape home care

Offers assistants, companion sitters and personal care specialists with personal and home care services. Services are currently available in Southern Maine with planned availability statewide, for seniors of all faiths and levels of need.

Foster Grandparent Program of York and Cumberland Counties

The Foster Grandparent Program supports quality child care and schools by placing volunteers in child development centers and schools as mentors and tutors with children with special needs.  Schools and child development centers benefit from additional individualized attention promoting school readiness in child development and academic success in schools.

Hospice of Southern Maine

A nonprofit Hospice organization and operator of the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. Services include home assistance, pain management and bereavement services for families and caregivers. Income-eligible patients can qualify for subsidized care.

Maine Medical Center Geriatric Center

Outpatient geriatric programs. Services include a Falls Clinic for strength and balance, general geriatric assessments, and a dementia evaluation center.

In dementia evaluations, a collaborative team consisting of a geriatrician, nurse and social workers can make a diagnosis of dementia or memory disorder, provide information about the disease, and offer access to resources for appropriate care.

Mayflower Place Assisted Living Facility

35 one-bedroom assisted living apartments located in South Sanford, owned by the Sanford Housing Authority. Features a full kitchen with provision of three meals per day, housekeeping services, personal care services and 24-hour staffing. Medical services provided by Goodall Hospital and the State of Maine Dept. of Human Services.

Retiree and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of York and Cumberland Counties

Volunteer opportunities include public health programs, tutoring and mentoring programs for students, and immigrant assistance.

Sanford Housing Authority

Manages public housing and Section 8 voucher programs for Sanford, Springvale and the surrounding towns of Alfred, Kennebunk, Lebanon, North Berwick, Wells, Shapleigh and Acton.

Properties include 114 units of age-restricted senior housing and the 35-unit Mayflower Place assisted living facility in Sanford (see link, above).

Senior Companion Program (SCP) of York and Cumberland Counties

SCP volunteers provide companionship to fail seniors in order to provide socialization, transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping and other essential errands, and respite for family caregivers.  Volunteers receive a non-taxable stipend in return for volunteering, meal and travel support.

Shuttlebus and Zoom Turnpike Express

Provides ShuttleBus local service within Biddeford, Saco and Old Orchard Beach; ShuttleBus intercity service connecting Tri-Towns with Scarborough, South Portland and Portland; and ZOOM commuter service linking Biddeford and Saco with downtown Portland.

Affiliated with Mercy Hospital, VNA’s LifeStages programs provide in-home care services to help seniors maintain independent lifestyles as they age. Services include companionship and personal care, transportation, chronic disease management, and mediation services for seniors and their families.

VNA LifeStages Alzheimer’s care

Affiliated with Mercy Hospital, VNA’s LifeStages programs provide in-home care services to help seniors maintain independent lifestyles as they age. Specialized “Care Navigators” trained in Alzheimer’s care can work with clients living at home or in long-term care facilities.

York County Community Action

Also offers scheduled bus and van services for medical and shopping appointments: the WAVE bus, connecting Sanford to Wells and Biddeford 7 days a week; Sanford Transit, running between Springvale and South Sanford 5 days a week;  and the Shoreline Explorer Line 5, from Sanford to Wells Beach 7 days a week.
